Best Practices for Marathon Training

As we progress on our Road2CIM, our second stop focuses on the Best Practices for Marathon Training. Identifying the right training resources and plans is crucial, but navigating the complexities of marathon preparation can be challenging. Questions about mileage, pacing, gear selection, and cross-training often arise, and it’s important to strike the right balance.

At this stop, we’ll be hearing from the Official CIM Coaches from Fleet Feet and Team Run Run, who will share expert advice on how to tackle these key aspects of marathon training.

Check out the cards below for valuable insights that will guide you in the right direction.

Finding the right mileage for marathon training can be complex, as each runner’s body is different. To determine the appropriate weekly mileage and long runs, consider factors such as previous injuries, current training, and acknowledging other races on your calendar. Overall mileage should be increased gradually to help your body adapt and avoid injury, while long runs are essential for building endurance. Pacing is crucial for optimizing your training, as each type of run serves a different purpose. Easy runs build aerobic base and aid recovery, speed work enhances speed and endurance, and long runs develop stamina for race day. Proper pacing ensures each workout effectively contributes to your overall marathon preparation and performance. Hear from our official CIM performance coaches from Team Run Run in the video below.

Rest, Recovery, & Fun

Why it’s all important

Rest, recovery, and having fun are essential components of marathon training that contribute to both physical and mental well-being. Rest days and recovery periods allow your muscles to repair, adapt, and grow stronger, reducing the risk of injury and overtraining. Enjoying your training is key to staying motivated, committed, and creating long-lasting positive memories. Incorporating these factors into your training plan not only enhances physical performance but also keeps you mentally engaged and excited about your marathon journey. Hear from our Official CIM Performance Coaches from Team Run Run in the video below.
