CIM winner and SRA Elite athlete set to compete in World Championships
Daniel Tapia, a standout on the Sacramento Running Association’s Elite Team, has been offered a spot on the U.S. marathon team for the upcoming World Championships in Moscow, Russia.
Tapia, who lives in Castroville, won the California International Marathon last December, pulling away from Ethiopia’s Tesfaye Alemayehu in windy, rainy conditions with a 2-hour, 16-minute, 29-second effort.
He won that race while attending law school and working full-time at his family’s restaurant in Salinas. Tapia received the invitation to join the U.S. world team while studying for the bar exam.
He credits the SRA’s financial support as a big reason for his success.
“I’ve gotten a big boost from the Sacramento Running Association,” he said. “I have no complaints.”
Tapia finished ninth in the 2013 Boston Marathon with a 2:14.30 performance.
He joins SRA Elite teammate Kim Conley in the World Championships, scheduled for Aug. 10-18. Conley, a former UC Davis standout and a 2012 Olympian, is set to compete in the 5,000 meters.
The Sacramento Running Association is a non-profit organization dedicated to finding ways to encourage people of all ages and abilities to run. The SRA is committed to developing new, quality running events that appeal to a broad variety of runners.
SRA events include the recent Gold Rush 100k and Freedom Mile, the Folsom Blues Breakout Half Marathon on Oct. 19, the California International Marathon on Dec. 8, the Super Bowl Sunday 10k Run on Feb. 2 and the Credit Union SACTOWN Ten-Mile Run on April 6.
SRA beneficiaries include the American River Parkway, youth fitness programs, local running venues and aspiring young runners.
