Sacramento schoolkids ready for three events at Burbank

The Sacramento Running Association’s Spring Youth Fitness Program includes a series of free track meets at Luther Burbank High School for Sacramento elementary school students.

The meets, set for June 2, 4 and 9, run from 3:30-5:30 p.m. The SRA plans to bus children in grades 3-6 from 12 schools and clubs to the events.

Focusing on effort, spirit and respect, the meets encourage kids to make healthy choices for themselves.

“These meets offer a segment of our community, our youth, the opportunity to be exposed to the sport of track and field in a safe, healthy and fun environment,” SRA Special Events Manager Ellen Moore said. “We focus on effort, spirit and respect and encourage the kids to make the connection between fitness and fun.

“The kids are recognized for their commitment to those principles as we strive to not only teach them about the sport but also about how to be a productive and positive member of our community by making healthy choices in all facets of life.”

Competition is scheduled in the 100 and 200 meters, 4×100-meter relay, 4×400-meter relay, long jump, high jump, hurdles, shot put and turbo javelin. Participants will receive school-specific T-shirts and ribbons.

Participating schools and clubs include Peter Burnett, John Bidwell, Ethel Phillips, Sequoia, Golden Empire, Edward Kemble, Cowan, John Cabrillo and Pony Express Elementary Schools, Teichert Branch Boys & Girls Club, Leataata Floyd Elementary School Boys & Girls Club and Pacific Elementary School Boys & Girls Club.

SRA Kids Awards will be given out to one boy and one girl from each school at each track meet who best embodies effort, spirit and respect.

The SRA’s Youth Fitness Program, which started in 1988, attracts more than 5,000 children annually. The spring program was added in 2010.
