Guaranteed entries, charity spots remain available for Dec. 6 race
Runners hoping to land a spot in the popular California International Marathon still have two ways to gain entry into the Dec. 6 race from Folsom to the
state Capitol.
Put on by the Sacramento Running Association, the 33rd annual event reached its general registration cap earlier this month, marking the seventh consecutive year the race has hit its limit.
But there are still two paths to the starting line.
The window for guaranteed entries opens on Thursday, Oct. 1 and closes on Oct. 16. Anyone with a qualifying time within five minutes of Boston Marathon qualifying standards is guaranteed entry during that time period. The entry fee is $175.
There are also a limited number of charity entries available at $275 each, with 100 percent of the proceeds going to partner beneficiaries, including Sacramento Running Association Kids youth fitness programs, the American River Parkway Foundation and the UC Davis Children’s Hospital.

“In accordance with our identity as ‘the fastest marathon in the West’ and as a ‘race for runners, put on by runners,’ we are excited to announce again the opening of our guarantee entry period for time-conscious and high-achieving marathoners seeking PRs and Boston qualifying times,” SRA Executive Director Scott Abbott said.
“As marathon participation has increased over the years, CIM has become a high-demand event, and we are excited to be an event that has become a key item on many people’s ‘bucket lists,’ as well as an annual tradition for many local, regional, and national runners seeking a well-organized marathon.
“However, the serious marathoner is still very important to us, and we are proud to set aside guaranteed entries and provide this service to the runners who are core to CIM’s identity and history.”
Runners who don’t meet the guaranteed time standards can choose the charity option.
“These charity entries play a major role in helping SRA fulfill its mission to be a health and wellness leader in the region,” Abbott said.
General registration, charity entries and guaranteed entries are expected to push the CIM’s registration total to 9,000 again.
Spots are still available in the Bank of the West Relay. The entry fee for the four-person relay is $190; high school teams can enter for $50. The relay division cap is 1,000 teams.
The CIM has long enjoyed a reputation as a great race to earn a Boston Marathon qualifying time. The 26.2-mile test from Folsom to the state Capitol is slightly downhill, and weather conditions are normally cool enough to produce fast times.
The Sacramento Running Association is a non-profit organization dedicated to finding ways to encourage people of all ages and abilities to run. The SRA is committed to developing new, quality running events that appeal to a broad variety of runners.
Other SRA events include the California Family Fitness Super Sunday Run on Feb. 7, the Credit Union SACTOWN Run on April 3 and the Gold Rush 50k on May 14.
