Six other races join forces with USA Today Sports

The California International Marathon and six other well-respected road races have joined the

USA Today Sports Active Alliance, a network of independent events aiming to more efficiently navigate media, marketing and sponsorship opportunities.

The CIM, put on by the Sacramento Running Association and set for Dec. 6, has signed on with the Active Alliance with the Eversource Hartford Marathon, the Portland (OR) Marathon, the Rite Aid Cleveland Marathon, the Detroit Free Press/Talmer Bank Marathon, the GO! St. Louis Marathon and the Indianapolis Monumental Marathon.

“We are extremely excited to join the Active Alliance, as it brings together a consortium of the top independently owned marathons in the United States,” SRA Executive Director Scott Abbott said. “As the running event market continues to get infiltrated from every angle by new opportunists, it is great to connect these reputable and time-tested regional events into the context of a larger national showcase.

“With CIM being the first California marathon in the Alliance, we believe we provide a unique and important dynamic to the group, and it is a further sign of the great reputation CIM has built for itself over the last 33 years.  We are thrilled to be on the ground-floor of this venture with six other fabulous marathons, and look forward to the great opportunities that the Active Alliance has in its sights.”

Active Alliance races receive visibility from a national platform and benefit from media resources provided by USA Today Sports and its parent, Gannett, Co., Inc. New partnerships, increased local and regional promotion and heightened editorial coverage is expected.

The Active Alliance expects to grow to 15-20 events by 2016.

“We expect to help drive a significant amount of new registrations from runners who otherwise may not know much about these great races,” said Bruce Revman, an endurance and lifestyle industry veteran who will help oversee the Active Alliance.

“And I know that’s an exciting opportunity to the race directors.”
