SRA teammates ready for U.S. road race final

Sacramento Running Association teammates Shadrack Biwott and Kim Conley aim for high finishes in Sunday’s .US National Road Racing Championships in Alexandria, Va.

The 12k event, which features a $100,000 purse, is the 10th and final stop on the USA Running Circuit.

Biwott, from Folsom, ranks second in the men’s point standings with 52, eight behind leader Matt Tegenkamp. The winner of Sunday’s race will receive 45 points, with the runner-up getting 36 and the third-place finisher 30.

The former University of Oregon All-American has enjoyed a stellar 2013 season. Biwott finished second in the USA 20k Championships and placed third in three other national championships: the USA Marathon Championships, the USA Half Marathon Championships and the USA 10k Championships.

“I am happy with my training,” Biwott said. “I am excited about this weekend’s race since it’s the final race of the year. I know I am in good shape. It will come down to race strategies.”

Conley, a 2012 Olympian in the women’s 5,000 meters who lives in West Sacramento, has also enjoyed a series of strong performances in 2013.

The former UC Davis standout finished second in the U.S. Cross Country Championships and placed 12th in the 5,000 meters at the IAAF World Championships in Athletics in Moscow, Russia.

“My fall training has been going well,” she said. “I’m hoping my strength will serve me over the longer distance.”
