Fifth Annual Race Adds 5k, Finishes on the Goal Line

The fifth annual Super Sunday Run offers runners a few new twists and the same great way to start off Super Bowl Sunday.

A 5k has been added to the 10k run for the race on Feb. 2, with both races starting outside Hornet Stadium at Sacramento State University and finishing on the goal line inside the stadium. For the first time, runners can run down the football field and finish by surging into the end zone.

The 5k and 10k races begin at 9 a.m. A Future Stars’ 40-Yard Dash for kids 12 and under is set for 8:30 a.m. on the Hornet Stadium field.

The event is put on by the Sacramento Running Association.

The 10k course goes through Sacramento State’s campus, across the Guy West Bridge into Campus Commons and back to campus before the stadium finish. The 5k course winds around campus before ending in the stadium.

“We’ll be finishing right on the goal line,” race director Michelle La Sala said. “They’ll get to run down the numbers. There’ll be cheerleaders and a drum line.

“It’s not your typical race finish on the road … It’s more fun for people.”

The event gets runners in a Super Bowl mood with football-themed awards and stadium-style post-race food and beverages. Runners are encouraged to wear football jerseys. There’s also plenty of space in the Hornet Stadium parking lot for tailgate parties.

A field of 2,000 runners is expected.

Registration for the 10k is $40 until Feb. 1 at 11:59 p.m. and $45 on race day. The 5k costs $30 until Feb. 1 at 11:59 p.m. and $35 on race day. Registration is available at www.runsra.org.

The Future Stars’ 40-Yard Dash is free.
