Sacramento Running Association and Capital Road Race Management Join Forces to Elevate Sacramento’s Running Community

Founder and Longtime Community Leader Rich Hanna Announces Retirement from CRRM

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — The Sacramento Running Association (SRA) and Capital Road Race Management (CRRM) announce the two long-standing pillars of the regional running community are formally joining forces. As CRRM owner and founder Rich Hanna retires from ownership, the organizations will combine operations to strengthen race production, enhance athlete experience, and expand charitable impact throughout the Sacramento region.

Since his first race — a marathon at age 13 — Hanna has played a significant role in the Sacramento area’s running culture as an athlete, coach, race director, mentor, volunteer, and timer. Hanna launched CRRM after serving on Run to Feed the Hungry’s planning committee, with the goal of expanding participation in the sport and charitable fundraising. Events Hanna has supported have helped local charities raise more than $20 million throughout the course of his career.

“After nearly thirty unforgettable years building Capital Road Race Management (CRRM) and serving the running community I love, the time feels right for me to step aside and pass the baton,” said Rich Hanna, retiring owner of CRRM. “I’ve been blessed to work with an incredibly talented group of people at CRRM and some amazing nonprofit organizations throughout the years. I’m truly grateful to everyone who has made this journey so memorable. After developing and nurturing so many of our local races, I’m excited to move to the other side and enjoy them as a participant.”

“By joining forces with the Sacramento Running Association, we’re ensuring that our events will continue to thrive with the same commitment to excellence, community spirit, and runner experience that have defined us from the beginning. I can’t think of a better partner to carry this legacy forward and continue growing the sport in our region,” Hanna added.

Founded in 1999 by Hanna, Capital Road Race Management has grown to be Northern California’s premier event management and timing company, supporting races from California to Hawaii. CRRM provides advanced chip-timing technology as well as customized event services to more than 75 races annually, including CRRM-owned events: Fair Oaks Chicken Run, Barks & Brews 5K, Urban Cow Half Marathon, and Apple Hill Half Marathon.

“I’m incredibly proud of the legacy Rich Hanna built and grateful for the opportunity to have worked for an organization that has truly been a force for good in the Sacramento running community and beyond,” said Chris Mason, Managing Director of CRRM Services. “Rich’s commitment to quality, integrity, and service set a standard that has shaped countless events and supported dozens of nonprofit organizations. As CRRM moves forward as part of the Sacramento Running Association, I’m excited to build on that foundation—continuing to create and support memorable events that serve our athletes, partners, and communities.”

The Sacramento Running Association, founded in 1982, is a community-based nonprofit that promotes the sport of running in the greater Sacramento area. The SRA manages events and programs that benefit local runners of all ages and abilities. SRA owns and operates the California International Marathon and Relay, Run the Parkway, the Credit Union SACTOWN Run, and hosts additional community-based running events such as the SRA Youth XC Series and the Sacramento Hall of Fame and Night of Achievement.

“Merging operations with Capital Road Race Management is an exciting step forward for the Sacramento Running Association and for endurance events in our region,” said Tamara Torlakson, Sacramento Running Association Board President. “Rich Hanna has set the gold standard for race timing and event support in Sacramento, and his impact on our running community is immeasurable. We are honored to carry his legacy forward. By keeping CRRM locally run and aligning its expertise with SRA’s mission, we are creating new opportunities to elevate the quality, consistency, and experience of races throughout the Sacramento area.”

The partnership aims to enhance the quality and long-term sustainability of running events across Northern California while strengthening Sacramento’s reputation as a premier running destination. Together, the organizations will provide services to more than 125,000 runners annually and contribute over $2 million to the Sacramento community through programs, giving, and fundraising efforts. The combined efforts are estimated to generate a yearly regional economic impact of over $40 million.

“Sacramento has been incredibly fortunate to have two major running organizations—SRA and Capital Road Race Management—serving our community for decades,” said Sacramento Running Association Executive Director Scott Abbott. “Together, they’ve been cornerstones of what makes Sacramento one of the best running cities in the United States. As someone who grew up in this running community and has been shaped by the work of both organizations, it’s deeply rewarding to see them come together formally. This merger strengthens our ability to serve runners and ensures a vibrant, sustainable future for Sacramento’s running community.”

Sacramento Running Association is a non-profit organization dedicated to finding ways to encourage people of all ages and abilities to run. The SRA is committed to developing new, quality running events that appeal to a broad variety of runners.

Capital Road Race Management has delivered professional race timing and event management services across Northern California, Nevada, and Hawaii, helping events operate efficiently while maximizing participant experience and fundraising impact.
