I’m one of those crazy runners that wake up before dawn to run. I throw on running clothes and reflective gear and head out the door before my brain fully realizes my body is awake and moving. It’s become such a routine thing, most days I don’t even think about it. But this past Sunday, Daylight Savings arrived! My 5:30 am run now feels like 4:30! Those beautiful sunrises at the end of last week’s runs have been replaced by dark skies. It’s a struggle for my body (and brain) to adjust. So, here’s what I’m doing:

  • I’m staying committed to my training plan and goals. This year my target race is the Inaugural Gold Country Half in June. I’m also sneaking in the San Francisco Rock ‘n Roll Half Marathon for fun. Consistent running is key for me.
  • Running with friends. Lucky for me there are several groups in my running club that meet before dawn. Knowing people are expecting me keeps me accountable.
  • Getting my sleep. One hour less of sleep does not give me back the hour lost! I’m a better runner, friend, mom and wife when I get enough sleep.
  • Being kind to myself. The first few morning after Daylight Savings Time go by quickly. Morning rushes seem even more frantic. If this means I need to cut my morning run short to make sure everyone gets out the door on time, that’s okay. As my coach likes to say, “You got what you needed.” My translation: don’t beat myself up because life happened.

Within a week or so, I’ll adjust to the earlier mornings and start enjoying the wonderful Spring/Summer evenings we have in the Sacramento area!
