Jane Kibii and Nico Montanez Win 2019 Credit Union SACTOWN Run

Race raises over $200,000 for Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals

SACRAMENTO, Calif.—The 2019 SACTOWN Run, organized by the Sacramento Running Association (SRA) and sponsored by credit unions from California and Nevada, raised over $200,000 for Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals, including Sacramento’s UC Davis Children’s Hospital.

Nearly 2,000 runners took to the streets of Sacramento on Sunday morning for the Children’s Hospital Miracle Mile, the SACTOWN 5k and the SACTOWN 10-mile races.

The event’s featured race, the 10-miler, saw returning champion Jane Kibii of Auburn, Calif. defend her title, while Nico Montanez of Mammoth Lakes, Calif. improved upon his 2018 runner-up finish to capture his first SACTOWN Run win.

Kibii has now won six SACTOWN 10-mile titles in the event’s nine-year history (2012, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019).

Kibii separated herself from the rest of the women’s field from the start, coming through the five-mile halfway split in 27:22, with Kaylee Flanagan of Louisville, Colo. and Molly Grabill of Boulder, Colo. running together through halfway in 27:51.

Kibii would go on to cross the finish line in first in 55:18, Flanagan second in 55:57 and Grabill third in 56:17.

“I’m really fortunate to have the support of the Sacramento Running Association and the Sacramento running community,” said Kibii. “It means a lot to me to win this race because it’s a way to give back to the SRA and the city that supports me. Thank you!”

The men’s race had four runners distance themselves from the rest of the pack early on, with Seth Totten of Santa Barbara, Calif. leading the group through the first five miles in 24:15. Montanez made a move just past halfway to separate himself from the group, with only William Reyes of Chico, Calif able to cover the move.

Montanez would prove to be the best on the day, crossing the finish line first in 48:36 after battling with Reyes over the second half of the race. Reyes secured a runner-up finish in his first SACTOWN appearance, running 49:02, with third place finisher CJ Albertson of Fresno, Calif. close behind in 49:06

“It felt good to come out here and finally win this race,” said Montanez. “I’m super appreciative for guys like Seth Totten and Will Reyes for making the race an honest one–it brought out the best in me.”

The event served as the 10-mile championship for USA Track & Field’s Pacific Association. Unofficial scoring looks to have the SRA Elite women and the HOKA ONE ONE Aggies men winning the team titles.

Morgan Gonzales of Folsom, Calif won the women’s 5k in 18:24. Jedidiah Soliz of Carmicheal, Calif. won the men’s 5k in 16:26.
