SRA ultra is great training for summer 100-milers

The second annual Gold Rush 100k offers a 50k option, a new start and finish and a team competition with a cash reward.

The Gold Rush 100k/50k begins at 5 a.m. on May 10 in historic Folsom. The 50k finishes in Magnolia Ranch on Highway 49 near Coloma; the 100k course turns around at the 50k finish and returns to historic Folsom.

The course, which follows the American River and Folsom Lake into the foothills, uses much of the same trail as last year’s Gold Rush 100k. It also features 5,600 feet of elevation gain and meets the Western States Endurance Run’s new qualifying standards.

“The old course did not meet the criteria; that’s why we changed the course,” Gold Rush race director Bill Hambrick said. “The course will still follow the trails the gold miners used in the 1800s, following the South Fork of the American River and Folsom Lake.”

The event, put on by the Sacramento Running Association, remains a great training run for a variety of upcoming 100-mile races, including Western States.

“It just fits into the Northern California racing schedule really well for training for the summer 100-milers throughout the country,” Hambrick said.

A two-person team competition will include $300 for first, $200 for second and $100 for third in the men’s, women’s and co-ed divisions.

Runners can register at www.goldrush50k.org. Cost is $200 for the 100k and $95 for the 50k, with registration closing on May 9 at 7 p.m.

The Sacramento Running Association is a non-profit organization dedicated to finding ways to encourage people of all ages and abilities to run. The SRA is committed to developing new, quality running events that appeal to a broad variety of runners.
