April 20, 2020 California International Marathon COVID-19 Statement
CIM is still months away, it is very difficult to have any definitive clarity over the status of the event. We are working very closely on an ongoing basis with all of our municipal partners and our local health and public safety officials to understand the ever-changing conditions and how they might affect the event. Our primary goal is to partner with all of these agencies in ensuring community health. All of the community stakeholders of this important civic amenity are committed to helping us hold the 38th annual California International Marathon in December 2020 if public health conditions provide any avenue to do so.In response to the current uncertainty of the staging of large community events, and specifically the disruption that has created and will continue to create in the endurance sport industry, the California International Marathon organizers are committed to these actions as they relate to preparing for the 2020 event in December:
-
- We have worked with municipal and public safety agencies to increase our registration cap by 500 additional runners to make room for displaced runners of other canceled events, and we will hold these 500 extra spots until October to accommodate runners in late summer and early fall events that may be in doubt.
- We are instituting a “worry free” registration policy for all 2020 marathon registrations. If the 2020 CIM is unable to be conducted for any reason related to the COVID-19 public health crisis, all 2020 CIM registrants will receive a one-time voucher that will allow them to register for free for any one future CIM through 2023.
- If necessary, we will work to alter event operations and participant services in any and every way necessary to conduct the event under changing public health guidelines to ensure a safe event for all participants, volunteers, event staff, and for the health of our community.
The California International Marathon is owned and operated by the Sacramento Running Association which is a community-based non-profit organization that develops events and programs and provides charitable contributions to enhance community health, fitness, and wellness in the greater Sacramento-area. We appreciate all of the support of our participants, supporters, partners, and event stakeholders that are committed to working with us during this uncertain time to help us continue to operate to put on the 2020 CIM, future CIMs, and all of our other events and programs that make Sacramento a better place to live, work, and play.
