The inaugural Capitol 5k will cross the California International Marathon’s finish line on Saturday, December 1

The Sacramento Running Association has added a premier 5k to the California International Marathon’s race weekend. The inaugural Capitol 5k will run the day before CIM on Saturday, December 1 and finish at the CIM finish line.

The addition of the Capitol 5k will add to an already monumental CIM event, expanding race weekend for marathon participants who choose to complete the Capitol Challenge, while also providing non-marathon runners the opportunity to participate in CIM weekend.

“The California International Marathon is one of the nation’s most respected running events, and it is such a valued civic amenity here in Sacramento,” said Mike Testa, President & CEO of Visit Sacramento.

“We are excited to work with the Sacramento Running Association to add the Capitol 5k on Saturday to expand the programming of CIM weekend and further enhance what is already such an important piece of the local tourism landscape,” added Testa.

The inaugural Capitol 5k followed by the youth-focused UC Davis Children’s Hospital maraFUNrun 5k are expected to attract around 5,000 participants of all ages.

Capitol 5k participants will receive a Capitol 5k tech t-shirt and be awarded a medal at the finish line. Age-group awards will also be presented to the top-3 finishers in each age category. Runners participating in both the 5k and the CIM the next day, will be eligible to complete the Capitol Challenge to earn an additional medal.

“With the addition of the Capitol 5k to the marathon weekend line-up, there’s now a race for everyone at CIM. From national caliber runners competing for prize purses and Olympic Trials qualifying times, to social runners completing the Marathon Relay with friends, to those just beginning their running journey with the Capitol 5k, all of them will now be able to experience the unique joy of crossing the CIM finish line,” said Eli Asch, SRA Director of Race Operations.

“We believe any kind of running—any pace, any distance—improves people’s fitness and can change their lives for the better, and the addition of the Capitol 5k to CIM weekend reflects that,” added Asch.

Capitol 5k registration is currently open. Registration is $35 until August 31, $40 from September 1-October 11, $45 from October 12-November 15, $50 from November 16-November 29, and $55 November 30 (if available). The Capitol Challenge is a $45 add-on for CIM runners and can be added during marathon registration. The UC Davis Children’s Hospital maraFUNrun 5k is free for all youth participants.

The Capitol 5k will start at 13th St. and L St. at 11 a.m. on December 1 and be followed by the UC Davis Children’s Hospital maraFUNrun at 11:45 a.m.. Both races will finish at the CIM finish line, in-front of the California State Capitol at 9th St. and Capitol Mall.
