Former UC Davis standout claims 1,000-meter crown

Sacramento Running Association standout Lauren Wallace turned in a big performance at just the right time Sunday, winning the women’s 1,000 meters in the

USA Track & Field Indoor Championships in Boston.

Wallace, 26, held off three rivals in a furious finish at the Reggie Lewis Center. Choosing to stay on the inside, the former UC Davis runner finished in a meet record 2 minutes, 40.42 seconds, just ahead of Nike’s Treniere Moser 2:40.62, Nike’s Stephanie Brown 2:40.62 and adidas’ Charlene Lipsey (2:40.86).

“I knew that everyone was going to run wide,” Wallace said. “That seems to be the tactic on an indoor track. (Saturday) night I was going over my race plan, I just decided to stay comfo in lane 1. I knew there’d be a gap opening up, so I took advantage of the gap and gave it my all the last 50 meters.

“It’s unreal. It hasn’t set in yet. The coolest part was running through the tape. I’ve never been able to do that before. The tape was really, really cool.”

Wallace has been training with the NorCal Distance Project and is coached by Drew Wartenburg, who also coaches 2012 Olympian Kim Conley. Conley, an SRA teammate of Wallace’s, won the USA Half Marathon Championship in Houston on Jan. 18 with a 1:09:44 effort.
