Shopping, health, inspiration highlight annual gathering
The California International Marathon Health & Fitness Expo, set for Friday and Saturday at the Sacramento Convention Center, offers runners and non-runners plenty of reasons to attend.
Looking for just the right holiday gift for a running friend? The Expo hosts more than 75 exhibitors featuring brand-new designs in running gear and shoes, plus the official CIM merchandise store.
Ready to start a healthier lifestyle? The latest developments in sports, fitness and nutrition are on display,
including an Ask a Nutritionist session hosted by UC Davis Children’s Hospital.
Searching for inspiration? Olympian Kim Conley, a West Sacramento resident and UC Davis graduate, and 1989 CIM champion Budd Coates, an author and Runner’s World contributor, are scheduled to deliver talks and be available for questions and autographs.
Want to lend a hand? The CIM has partnered with ReUseIt to help donate shoes and clothing to those in need. Anyone can bring gently used shoes or clothes to the donation station at the West Lobby of the Sacramento Convention Center, or donate items at the CIM start line and along the first four miles of the course on Sunday.
The CIM Health & Fitness Expo runs from noon-6 p.m. on Friday and from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. on Saturday in Halls C, D and E at the Convention Center, 1400 J Street, Sacramento. The Expo entrance is on 13th Street. Admission is free.
“We are excited to welcome runners, spectators, exhibitors and the Sacramento community to the CIM Health & Fitness Expo,” said Ellen Moore, Special Events Manager for the Sacramento Running Association, which puts on the CIM.
“This kickoff to marathon weekend is always full of great energy, amazing volunteers, a real sense of community and some awesome retail therapy right in the heart of holiday shopping season.”
The Expo features interactive exhibits, live entertainment, expert speaker panels, product trials and all things marathon. Highlights include sessions on how to run the CIM, connecting with the CIM Pace Team, fueling for performance and preventing injury and a press conference featuring top CIM contenders.
Those participating in the marathon, Bank of the West CIM Relay Challenge or UC Davis Children’s Hospital maraFUNrun can pick up their packets at the Expo, network with other runners and learn more about the best way to train for and run the CIM.
Besides Conley and Coates, those scheduled to participate in seminars and interact with the public include KCRA-TV anchor Deirdre Fitzpatrick, a 10-time CIM finisher; Dr. Steve Polansky and Denis Zilaff, who have finished all 31 CIMs; and Rich Hanna, owner of Capital Road Management, a 2:17 marathoner and a long-time running coach.
The Sacramento Running Association is a non-profit organization dedicated to finding new ways to encourage people of all ages and abilities to run. The SRA is committed to developing new, quality running events that appeal to a broad variety of runners.
